Ottawa County Board of Commissioners Approves Crockery Lake Restoration Project

At its recent board meeting on December 10, the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners approved a project to restore and maintain Crockery Lake in Chester Township. The initiative, supported by a $563,404 allocation from the General Fund balance and the Monsanto reserve, marks a collaborative effort between Ottawa County and Chester Township to enhance the ecological health and community value of the lake.

Preliminary unemployment rates for October 2024 were recently released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget. Ottawa County had an unemployment rate of 3.3%–no change from the September rate. Ottawa County had the second lowest rate of all Michigan counties in October.

As part of National Adoption Month, celebrated across the country since 1995 and in Michigan since 2002, the 20th Circuit and Ottawa County Probate Courts proudly announce their 22nd Annual Adoption Day Celebration. While a lack of affordable housing continues to be a major challenge for Michigan, Ottawa County communities are moving forward with solutions. Just 15 months after the state passed legislation expanding the use of Tax-Increment Financing (TIF) to support certain housing development activities, there are now three brownfield site redevelopments taking advantage of the tool in Ottawa County – two in Hudsonville and one in Spring Lake.

Preliminary unemployment rates for September 2024 were recently released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget. Ottawa County had an unemployment rate of 3.3%. This rate was .5 percentage points lower than the August rate of 3.8%, and Ottawa County had the fourth lowest rate of all Michigan counties in September.

Ottawa County Administration Building Closed Due to Power Outage

The Ottawa County Administration Building located at 12220 Fillmore, West Olive, is currently without power, impacting its ability to serve customers. This includes the Sheriff’s headquarters, County Clerk-Register of Deeds, Treasurer, and other departments.The power outage does NOT affect the Family Justice Center. Other County facility locations, such as Holland, Grand Haven, and Hudsonville, are operating and providing services and hearings as scheduled. Services are also available online at miOttawa We expect this issue to be resolved shortly and that services will resume on Friday, September 20.

Preliminary unemployment rates for July 2024 were recently released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget. Ottawa County had an unemployment rate of 4.1%. This rate was the fourth lowest of all Michigan counties in July and .3 percentage points higher than June’s rate. This change is less than the median increase of .5 percentage points across all Michigan counties during the same period.

West Nile Virus Found During Ottawa County Summer Mosquito Monitoring

West Nile virus has been detected in a mosquito in southwestern Ottawa County during recent Ottawa County Department of Public Health (OCDPH) summer mosquito monitoring activities. The detection is not a human case. No human cases of West Nile virus have been found in Ottawa County in 2024.

First Rabies-positive bat in 2024 identified in Ottawa County

The Ottawa County Department of Public Health (OCDPH) has been notified by the Michigan Bureau of Laboratories (BOL) that a bat recently submitted from Ottawa County has tested positive for rabies. This is the first case of rabies in an animal in the county this year. There were no reported cases of rabies in animals or humans in 2023.

Jamestown Tops Population Growth Among Ottawa County Local Units in 2023

From 2022 to 2023, 20 of Ottawa County’s 24 local government units saw their population grow. The biggest population increase was in Jamestown Township, which saw its population grow 2.5%. Grand Haven Township saw 2.3% growth, and the City of Hudsonville saw 2.2% growth.

Broadband Expansion Project Enters Next Phase

Ottawa County and 123NET have received final grant approvals from the State and are hitting the ground running on the broadband expansion project funded by Realizing Opportunity with Broadband Infrastructure Network (ROBIN) grant program. This grant program is operated by the State of Michigan and will fund middle mile broadband internet infrastructure. Grant preparations began back in 2022 with the official approval coming in March of 2024.

Ottawa Sands Temporarily Closed for Construction and Ecological Restoration starting April 1, 2024

Starting April 1, 2024, Ottawa Sands County Park will be closed to the public for construction and restoration work. In addition to the work that continues at the Idema Explorers Camp, major construction will commence this spring on the day-use area parking lot and modern restroom, paved loop path around the lake, and ecological enhancements at the lake and other restoration areas in the park. All these activities make the park unsuitable for public use at this time.

Ottawa County Population Saw Continued Growth in 2023

The US Census Bureau has released the 2023 county population estimates. With a population of 303,372, Ottawa County saw an increase of 2,454 people from 2022. The gain results from an estimated natural increase of 840 people and a positive net migration of 1,616 people. Since 2020, Ottawa County has seen a total increase of 6,456 people, remaining the 7th largest county in Michigan.

Ottawa County Department of Public Health Recommends Precautions for Measles

Spring break season is here, and many of you will be traveling, possibly to locations currently experiencing measles outbreaks. There are not yet any reported cases of measles in Ottawa County, but as of March 14, 2024, 58 measles cases have been reported by 17 jurisdictions, including three in Michigan. As of March 19, 2024, there have been 15 cases of measles reported in Chicago this year. (There were 58 cases of measles reported in the United States in all of 2023.)

Funding Agreement Approved by Ottawa County Board of Commissioners for Bass River Segment of Idema Explorers Trail

On March 12, 2024, the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners approved an agreement that would provide $715,000 in funding from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to assist with the completion of the Bass River Segment of the Idema Explorers Trail by the Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Commission (OCPRC).
